The Los Angeles Angels were introduced into the league as an expansion team in 1961 and were owned by the “Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry. They finished their first season at 70-91 (.435) a record for a first year expansion team that still holds today. By 1962, Autry’s Angels were competing for the ALCS and at one time led the AL. They would finish in 3rd place and missed the playoffs. By 1964, P Dean Chance won the Cy Young Award and the franchise was beginning to make the case for a new stadium. Autry came to a deal with the city of Anaheim in Orange County and the team would move after a name change in 1965 to the California Angels. The final season in LA drew only 566,727 paying customers to the games and in the inaugural season in Anaheim, the team sold over 1.4 million tickets proving that more than one team could compete in the Sate.
The 1970’s saw the rise of Now Hall of Fame Pitcher Nolan Ryan who hurled four of his seven no hitters in an Angels uniform.. Ryan would continue to pitch for the Halos until 1979 when then GM Buzzie Bavasi refused to resign him and allowed him to become a free agent. It is said that Bavasi later said that it “was the worst mistake I ever made in all my years of baseball!”.
The 80’s saw NFL Franchise LA Rams football team join the Angels in Anaheim and much to the dismay of the Angels, their stadium was enlarged with an additional 65,000 seats which enclosed the stadium and in short taking away some of the ambiance of baseball field and a seating capacity too large for baseball. 1982 saw the franchise sign another future Hall of Famer in Reggie Jackson as the team began to show signs of improvement. In 1984, Mike Witt became only the 13th player in MLB History to pitch a perfect game and the Angels won the AL West but could not get past the Boston Red Sox who went on to represent the AL in the World Series.
The 90’s were a poor decade for the franchise from Anaheim. The only significant events were the retirement of jersey #30 belonging to one time Angel Nolan Ryan who posted a 138-121 record with 3.06 ERA. Also, Garret Anderson became the 1st rookie to win the Player of the Month Award in July 1995. Garret hit .410 that month.
The new millennium proved to be a good omen for the Angels who in 2002 who recorded a 10-game winning streak in September to clinch a wild card spot in the playoffs.
In the playoffs, the Angels would dismiss the Yankees, defeat the Twins for the ALCS and defy the odds to beat the San Francisco Giants for their first World Series Title.
The Angels are managed by Mike Scioscia and are Coached by Ron Roenicke (Bench Coach), Alfredo Griffin (First Base Coach), Dino Ebel (Third Base Coach), Mickey Hatcher (Hitting Coach), Mike butcher (Pitching Coach), Orlando Mercado (Bullpen Coach) and Steve Soliz (Bullpen Catcher)
