The franchise ticket that is the Atlanta Braves is the oldest continuously operating franchise in American Sports History. They have played under many monikers, (the Boston Red Stockings 1876-1882, the Boston Beaneaters 1883-1906, Boston Doves 1907-1908, Boston Pilgrims 1909-1911, Boston Braves 1912-1935, the Boston Bees 1936-1940, the Boston Braves 1941-1952, the Milwaukee Braves 1953-1965 and finally the Atlanta Braves from 1966 to present.
Within three years of moving to Atlanta, the Braves were competing for the World Series and the 1969 Braves were led by Hank Aaron and Orlando Cepeda while Phil Niekro was on the mound. In capturing the first ever NL West title, the Braves face the New York Mets in the NLCS and were swept. It would be another 13-years before they would again have the opportunity.
The 1982 Braves were managed by Joe Torre and led by Dale Murphy. The team would again win the NL West but would meet up against the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS and were swept in 3-games. Nine Years later, in 1991, the franchise would finally get over the hump as they post a 94-68 record and meet up against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLCS. Pitchers Tom Glavine and Steve Avery would lead shutouts in the final two games to capture the NLCS Title. In the World Series, the Braves faced the Minnesota Twins and the Braves were up 3-2 as the series shifted back to Minnesota. The Twins would close out the Braves in the final two games to win the World Series. The 1992 squad, out to prove that the prior season was not a fluke, went out and won the NL West again with an 98-64 record. Facing the Pirates again in the NLCS, the Braves in exciting fashion, win the NLCS in 7-games. In the World Series, the Braves would face the Toronto Blue Jays in the first ever International World Series. The Braves take game 1 at home but give up game 2 as the series moved to Canada for the 1st time. The Jays would take a commanding 3-1 series lead winning both games at home. The Braves would win one more game but would succumb to the Blue Jays as Canada wins its first ever World Series Championship.
In the new millennium, the Braves would win 6 straight Division Championships (2000-2005) but have not made it back into the World Series.
This off season, the Braves signed OF Matt Diaz to a 1-year deal, signed RHP Mike Gonzalez to a 1-year deal, signed RHP Derek Lowe away from the Dodgers with a 4-year deal, signed RHP Kenshin Kawakami to a 3-year deal, signed OF Garrett Anderson to a 1-year deal, resigned LHP Tom Glavine to a 1-year deal, agreed to terms with 1B Casey Kotchman, released LHP Jeff Ridgeway, released RHP Phil Stockman
The Braves are managed Bobby Cox and are coached by Chino Cadahia (Bench Coach), Glenn Hubbard (First Base Coach), Brain Snitker (Third Base Coach), Roger McDowell (Pitching Coach), Terry Pendleton (Hitting Coach), Eddie Perez (Bullpen Coach) and Phil Falco (Strength and Conditioning Coach)
