Professional Baseball tickets began selling in 1869 in the city of Cleveland with the club known as the Forest Citys Baseball Club and would undergo a number of name changes and league affiliations.  In 1861, the Cleveland Spiders moved into League Park and was led by native Ohioan Cy Young.  The original owners of the Spiders, the Robinson Brothers, acquired a controlling interest in the St. Louis Cardinals in 1899

In 1915, the Spiders, now also known informally as the Braves, were sold to a syndicate headed by Chicago Railroad Contractor James C. Dunn and by 1920 the franchise had won the World Series.

In 1948, Bill Veeck go together a group of investors (one of which was Comedian Bob Hope) that purchased the Cleveland Indians for $1.6 million.  Under Veeck’s tutelage, the team led the way in breaking the color barrier in the American League as Veeck signed Larry Doby, a former player in the Negro League’s Newark Eagles a couple of weeks after the Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson.

In the playoffs, the Indians found themselves matched up against the Red Sox for the AL Pennant then the Braves for the World Series  The Indians battled the Braves but the Indians came out in game 6 with a very rested Bob Lemon who, along with Gene Bearden, gave the Indians a 4-3 victory and their 2nd World Series Title.

In 1986, ownership would again change hands as Richard Jacobs, the CEO of the real estate development company The Richard E. Jacobs Group  Jacobs would own the team until 2001.  The franchise would again negotiate with the city and use an excise tax on alcohol and cigarettes would be used to finance the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex.

In 1994, Jacobs Field opened and the team was on an upswing when the players strike killed the rest of he season.  The team picked up where they left off in 1995 as they combined to win 100 games to 44 losses.  The team won its first Divisional Title against Red Sox and defeated the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS in route to losing to the Atlanta Braves in 6 games in the World Series.  The Indians would repeat as AL Champions in 1996 but would again lose, this time the Divisional Series to the Baltimore Orioles.

The 1997 Indians finished with their third consecutive AL Central Title with an 86-75 record.  In the playoffs, the Indians defeated the New York Yankees 3-2, the Baltimore Orioles for the ALCS Title and faced the Florida Marlins in the World Series. The series would become tied after 6 games and in game 7 with the Indians ahead 2-1, Jose Mesa (closer) allowed the Marlins to tie the game.  Then in the 11th inning, Edgar Renteria drives in the winning run giving the Marlins their first Championship.
The 2001 season saw the Indians again with the AL Central with a 91-71 record.  Led by former MVP  Juan Gonzalez, Cleveland would stage the biggest comeback  in MLB History as the Indians rally from a 14-2 deficit to defeat the Seattle mariners 15-14 in 11-innings.   Seattle would return the favor in the playoffs as they eliminate the Indians in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

2007 saw the Indians return to the playoffs with their first Divisional Title since 1999.  In the playoffs, the Indians defeated the New York Yankees in the Division Series and even jumped out to a 3 to 1 lead over the Boston Red Sox but were upset as Boston swept the remaining games with the Indians to advance to the 2007 World Series.  The season wasn’t a complete loss as Grady Sizemore won the Gold Glove Award, CC Sabathia wont he 2nd Cy Young Award in team history and Manager Eric Wedge was awarded the first Manager of the Year Award in franchise history.

The Cleveland Indians are managed by Eric Wedge and coached by Jeff Datz (Bench Coach), Luis Rivera (First Base/Infield Coach), Joel Skinner (Third Base Coach), Derek Shelton (Hitting Coach), Chuck Hernandez (Bullpen Coach), Carl Willis (Pitching Coach), Dan Williams (Bullpen Catcher) and Dennis Malave (Bullpen Catcher)
