At the end of the 1891 the American Association Baseball League folded and the St. Louis Brown Stockings are one of the four teams that were accepted into the National League. Four years into the league and the team could do no better than 57-75 and by the end of the 1899 season, the owner declares bankruptcy.  The league, looking to trim costs, puts the Cardinals on the chopping block until the Robinson brothers, Frank and Stanley, took over the team, leaving their Cleveland Spiders to fold and bringing the Spiders stars to St. Louis including Cy Young.  They would change the team name to the Perfectos.  By the end of the 1899 season, the nickname the Cardinals stuck with fans and the franchise dropped the Perfectos in favor of the Cardinals.

It would take until 1926 before the Cardinals would win their first World Series, which was against Babe Ruth and the Bronx Bombers.  Going into the modern era, the Cardinals would pick up 6 World Series Championships (1926, 31, 34, 42, 44 and 46).

By 1964, the Cardinals were again itching for a championship and acquired OF Lou Brock from the Cubby’s.  Brock, in 103 games, scored 81 runs and by the time the World Series rolled around, the Cardinals were again matched up with their last championship foe, the New York Yankees.  The Cards would win the series in 7-games.  Three years later, the Cards again found themselves in the playoffs as they won the NL Pennant with a 101-60 record.  Led by Julian Javier and Orlando Cepeda, the Cards met the Boston Red Sox and the series would go 7-games as Bob Gibson led them to their 8th World Series.

In 1982 the team posted a 92-70 record and won its first NL East Championship.  The Cards met and swept the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS and  moved on to face the Milwaukee Brewers in what was known as the “Suds Series”.  Led by Willie McGee and Darrell Porter, the Cards win their 9th World Series in 7-games and Porter is named the Series MVP.  The next time the team would be in the big game would be 24-years later.

The 2006, the team posts an 83-78 record and barely makes it into the playoffs.  They are led by Albert Pujols  with Chris Carpenter leading the pitching staff the team disposed of San Diego Padres in 4-games and met the NY Mets in the NLCS.  The series went to 7-games and the Cards emerged victorious and would face the Detroit Tigers. The series would go 6-games and the Cards pick up World Series number 10 with a 4-2 series victory.  In defending their championship in ’07, the Cards would be swept by the Mets in the NLCS.

This off season, the Cards signed LHP Royce Ring, formerly of the Braves, to a 1-yr deal, released 2b Adam Kennedy and signed LHP Denny Reyes to a 2-year deal.

The Cardinals are managed by Tony La Russa and are coached by Joe Pettini (Bench Coach), Dave Duncan (Pitching Coach), Hal McRae (Hitting Coach), Marty Mason (Bullpen Coach), Dave McKay (First Base Coach), Jose Oquendo (Third Base Coach), Lou Brock (Special Instructor), Bob Gibson (Special Instructor) and Red Schoendienst (Special Assistant to the General Manager)
