History of the Bulls
Entering their 42nd year in the NBA, the Bulls began playing in 1966/67 season and won their first game (on the road) handedly 104-97 over the St. Louis Hawks. The next two games were at home and against perennial powerhouses’ San Francisco Warriors and the LA Lakers beating both teams to open the season 3-0. The team would squeak into the playoffs but fell against the Warriors in first round. The Bulls would continue to make the playoffs for the next 4 decades but it was the decade of the 80’s that would define the team.
Michael Jordan was drafted with the 3rd pick of the 1984 draft by the Bulls. By the end of his first season, Jordan he averaged 28.2 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game and 5.9 assists per game. He earned the Rookie of the Year Award and was selected to the All NBA Second Team. However, the Bulls were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by the Milwaukee Bucks.
Michael won his first of seven scoring titles in his third season, (1986/87) averaging 37.1 points per game. He would lead his team to the playoffs but would be turned back by Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. The Celtics and the Detroit Pistons would be the Bulls nemesis over the next four seasons until the 1990/91 season where Jordan and the Bulls would win their first championship.
The Bulls have appeared in the NBA Playoffs 27 times in 42 years and have won their division 7 times (1975, 1991, 92, 93, 96, 97 and 98), have appeared in the Conference Finals 10 times (1974, 75, 1989, 1990, 91, 92, 93, 96, 97 and 98). They have made it into the NBA Finals 6 times becoming champions all 6 times (1991, 92, 93, 96, 97 and 98).
The Bulls have had 4 Hall of Famers on their rosters to include George Gervin (1985/86), Coach Phil Jackson (1989-1998), Robert Parish (1996/97) and Nate Thurmond (1974/75). They have also retired 4 jerseys (#4 Jerry Sloan, #10 Bob Love, #23 Michael Jordan and #33 Scottie Pippin).
Team Awards include 3 NBA Coach of the Year honors (1967-Johnny Kerr, 1971-Dick Motta and 1996-Phil Jackson), 2 NBA Rookie of the Year Awards (1985 Michael Jordan and 2000 Elton Brand), 2 Sixth Man of the Year Awards (1996-Toni Kucok and 2005 Ben Gordon), 1 NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1988-Michael Jordan) and 5 NBA MVP Awards (All for Michael Jordan-1988, 1991, 92, 96 and 98).
