History of the Lakers
The LA Lakers, long one of the premier teams in the NBA, were the first team on the West Coast and have gone to the playoffs 44 times in 48 seasons. In their first season, they drafted Elgin Baylor and made it into the playoffs. It would be 11 years later that the Lakers would win their first Championship (1972) finishing the season with an All Time NBA Best Record of 69-13. Led by Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers took out the Bulls, the Bucks and the Knicks en route to the 1st of many titles.
One of the greatest rivalries of all time was Magic Johnson’s Showtime Lakers against Larry Bird and the Celtics. Between 1980 and 1991, the battles against their Eastern counterparts would culminate in the Lakers winning 5 titles (1980, 82, 85, 87 and 1988).
In addition to Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, the Lakers have had many superstar players to include Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul Jabbar), Connie Hawkins, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, and of course Kobe Bryant.
The Lakers have sold all season tickets for the foreseeable future but you can still get on a waiting list.
The Lakers have had 14 Hall of Fame Players on their rosters: Kareem Abdul Jabbar (1975-1989), Elgin Baylor (1960-1971), Wilt Chamberlain (1968-1973), Adrian Dantley (1977-1979), Gail Goodrich (1965-1968 / 1970-1976), Connie Hawkins (1973-1975), Phil Jackson (coach-1999-2004 / 05-present), Magic Johnson (1979-1991 / 1995-1996), Bob McAdoo (1981-1985), Pat Riley (coach-1981-1990), Bill Sharman (coach 1971-1976), Jerry West (1960-1974), James Worthy (1982-1994).
The team has retired 7 jerseys: #13 Wilt Chamberlain, #22 Elgin Baylor, #25 Gail Goodrich, #32 Magic Johnson, #33 Kareem Abdul Jabbar, #42 James Worthy and #44 Jerry West.
Playoffs include 44 playoff appearances, 24 Division Championships, 27 Conference Finals, 23 NBA Finals and 9 NBA Titles.
