History of the Magic

Entering their 19th season in the NBA, the Orlando Magic began in the 1989/1990 season and with a typical expansion record of 18-64.  It wouldn’t be until the addition of one
Shaquille O’Neal, in the 1992/93, season that the team would break even at 41-41.  Shaq, already a superstar, looked to take the team to new heights.  Shaq would win the Rookie of the Year with 23.4 points per game and 13.9 rebounds per game.

The Magic continued building a championship team and in the 1994/95 season the team reached its apex.  With Penny Hardaway, Shaq, Horace Grant and Nick Anderson, the Magic bulled their way through the playoffs beating the Celtics 4-1, a very strong Bulls team 4-2, the Indiana Pacers 4-3 only to be swept by the Houston Rockets in 4 games. After losing Shaq for the first 22 games of the 95/96 season, the Magic would once again make it in the East Finals and facing a rejuvenated Michael Jordan and his Bulls team.  Michael dominated the series and swept the team in 4 games.  Shaq would shock the NBA by announcing he was signing a free agent contract with the LA Lakers.

The 1997/98 season brought Coach Chuck Daily to the Magic but the team would be hampered by injuries.  The season broke even at 41-41 and Coach Daily would stay one more season before retiring from basketball.

A new decade brought much of the same mediocrity from the Magic as the first 7 seasons the team would not break the .500 mark.  It would not be until the 2007/2008 season that the team would again soar as they posted a 52-30 season under Head Coach Stan Van Gundy and made it as far as the Eastern Conference Finals where they were beat by the Detroit Pistons 4 games to 1.

The Magic have made 10 playoff appearances in 19 seasons, and have been Division Champions 3 times (1995, 1996 and 2008).  They have gone to the Conference Finals 2 times (1995 & 1996) and the NBA Finals 1 time (1995).  They have not won a championship.
The team has had 3 Hall of Famers on their rosters: Coach Chuck Daily (1997/98-1998/99), Patrick Ewing (2001/02) and Dominique Wilkins (1998/99).

The team has retired 1 jersey (#6 Magic Fans).

Team Awards include 1 Coach of the Year Award (2000 Doc Rivers), 4 Most Improved Player Awards (1991 Scott Skiles, 1999
