History of the Sixers

Entering their 46th season in the NBA, the Sixers are another storied franchise.  The first season (1963/64) in the NBA took them to the playoffs losing in the Eastern semi-finals to the Cincinnati Royals 3 games to 2.  The Sixers made the 1964/65 playoffs with the return of Wilt Chamberlain from the San Francisco Warriors and he led them as far as the Eastern Conference Finals where they would bow out to the eventual champion Boston Celtics.

The 1966/67 season would rematch the team against the Celtics (who had not lost a playoff series in 9 seasons) and this time the Sixers could not be stopped, taking out the Celtics in 6 games to meet the San Francisco Warriors.  The Sixers would win the title 4 games to 2 and became NBA Champions.  The Sixers would not see the finals again for 16 more seasons.

The 1982/83 season saw the Sixers stealing away Moses Malone from the Houston Rockets.  This move would propel the Sixers into the playoffs against their long time nemesis the LA Lakers and sweeping them in four games to win their second championship.

The Sixers made it to the NBA Finals again in 2001 led by Allen Iverson, Theo Ratliff, Dikembe Mutombo and Aaron Mckie against a Lakers team led by Shaq, Kobe, Derek Fisher and Rick Fox who took the series in 5 games claiming their 3rd title in the Phil Jackson era.

The Sixers have made the playoffs 30 times in 46 seasons.  They have won their Division 8 times (1966, 67, 68, 1977, 1980, 82, 83 and 2001.  They have gone to the Conference Finals 12 times (1965, 66, 67, 68, 1977, 78, 1980, 81, 82, 83, 85 and 2001.  They have entered the NBA Finals 6 times (1967, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983 and 2001) and won the NBA Championship 2 times (1967 and 1983).
