The Baylor Bears is the name used to refer to the Baylor University sports teams, although some women’s teams are still known as the “Lady Bears.” They are the only private school that belongs to the Big Twelve Conference. Their first NCAA title was won in 2004 by the men’s tennis team.
Traditionally, the Baylor Bears men’s baseball team has rarely been successful, however in recent years the team has improved. They have become one of only two teams to qualify for the Big Twelve Tournament every year since the conference was created. Despite past failure, the team is fast becoming one of the more successful in the league.
In 1907, the first men’s basketball team for Baylor University began play. They have won the Conference Regular Season Championships five times, and have made six NCAA tournament appearances, making it to the Final Four twice.
In 2003, the team was surrounded by one scandal after another, causing them to be fined by the league and given limited recruiting privileges as well. Despite this, the team bounced back and managed to rank reasonably high anyway.
Baylor Bears football, although not top rated in their division, does have many memorable moments and traditions. The Bears were the first team ever to have a homecoming, beginning the tradition in 1909. They are also involved in the popular “Battle of the Brazos” with Texas A&M.
The rivalry is named after the river that flows by both schools. Beginning in 1899, the Battle hit what was probably its worst moment in 1926, when an accident caused an outbreak of fighting between the two teams. Numerous injuries and one death caused the school to suspend games between the schools for several years, but even after beginning to play again, the rivalry has been limited to antics such as spray painting and mascot stealing.
The Baylor Bears nickname has been in effect since 1914, however the first real live bear mascot was not brought to the school until the 1920s. There has since been a series of bears that have had the honor of being the school’s mascot, and most have had different names. In 1974, students voted to name all subsequent bears Judge, after the school’s namesake. Currently, they have two bears, Joy and Lady, named after notable figures in the school.
The Baylor Bears may not be the most accomplished teams in the world of collegiate sports, but they are still well known and respected. They work hard and have produced some amazing athletes as well as a few good memories and stories.
