History
The Butler University Bulldogs first got their current nickname in 1919 when followers got tired of their old name, the Christians. The Bulldogs is the name of many different teams for the school but most notable among them is the men’s basketball team. They have six Conference Tournament Championships to their credit as well as three Conference Regular Season Championships and numerous appearances in the NCAA Tournaments.
Although individuals closely related to the school such as current and past students follow many of the different sports played at Butler, the basketball program is the most widely followed, gaining fans nationally as well as locally. There are a few reasons for this. The school does not have a BCS level football team, and is located in Indiana where “Hoosier Hysteria” is high, and basketball is the sport to watch.
The Butler University Bulldogs attribute their recent success to the “Butler Way” which they adopted in the 2006-07 school year. The Butler Way promotes team above self and leaves no room for selfishness or ego. The smallest school to play for a national championship since 1985, Butler is ranked among the highest in their conference.
Built in 1928, the Hinkle Fieldhouse is the home of the Bulldogs. It was the largest arena at the time, keeping that distinction until 1950. It is now the sixth oldest arena in the country to still be in play and has been classified as a U.S. Historic landmark. Costing just one million dollars to build, the field house was renovated in 1989. The current seating capacity is about 10,000.
The Butler University Bulldogs cheerleaders, dance team, and mascots are all present at men’s home basketball games. While the teams do support the school in general and appear at other games such as women’s basketball and football, often their primary focus is on the men’s basketball team. The team even has a band known as the Butler University Basketball Band, or BUBB.
Of course no team would be complete without their mascot. A bulldog named Blue was the original inspiration and mascot for the team, however in recent years the team has chosen to use an anthropomorphic bulldog who was recently named “Hink” in a contest held by the school. Like the other spirit teams, Hink of course supports all teams, but he is especially fond of basketball.
Living in Indiana, it is difficult not to be a basketball fan. The Butler University Bulldogs are one of the most loved teams in the area, and do a lot to earn the respect and admiration of their fans. The school is full of spirit and the individual members and teams are all supportive of each other, their fans, and their alumni.
