The name “Kentucky Wildcats” encompasses a wide range of sports include both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, swimming, track and field, golf, and tennis. It also includes women’s gymnastics and volleyball, and of course football.
The school gained their name in 1909, shortly after a victory over Illinois on the football field. A commandant at another school told a group of students that the Kentucky team had “fought like wildcats’” and the name caught on quickly in public and with the media.
No matter the other sports offered at the varsity level at University of Kentucky, basketball is their most successful sport. The Kentucky Wildcats basketball team was begun as a women’s team with the men’s team being added a year later. Eventually, the men’s team improved to the point that they are now the most winning team in college basketball and are considered one of the most elite teams in the league. They were the first Division I team to win more than 2,000 games and are second only to UCLA in Division I Championships.
Women’s basketball at Kentucky is almost as successful as the men’s team. Although they were the first basketball team for the school, the team was disbanded by school officials for many years because the sport was thought too strenuous for women. Eventually, the women won their team back and they are currently very successful, setting school records and winning games.
Although not as wildly successful as the basketball team, the Kentucky Wildcats football team is also highly recognized. With two Conference titles and one claimed National title, they compete against some of the best teams in the country. They currently have eleven players that have moved onto the NFL and several players in the past that have earned awards and recognition in professional football.
One sport not often mentioned in discussions of university successes is cheerleading. The Kentucky Wildcats cheerleaders are considered the most successful in the country. They not only have the most wins in their division, but are also the only school to have won consecutive championships on multiple occasions.
Aside from their enormous success within the world of cheerleading, the team has also gained national attention, appearing on several news programs and having been featured in a whole season of Cheerleader U on the Women’s Entertainment Network.
The Kentucky Wildcats are some of the best known teams in college sports and with good reason. From their unbelievable wins, to their outstanding stats, the University of Kentucky has a lot to be proud of and a lot of fans all over the country.
