The Michigan State Spartans is the name for the teams that represent Michigan State University. The school is involved in many sports, with football, hockey, and basketball being the most popular. Michigan State offers twelve varsity sports for men and thirteen for women.
The team colors of the Michigan State Spartans are green and white, and the mascot is a warrior named Sparty. The school has held the Spartans name since around 1925, with the cartoonish Sparty becoming known to fans in 1989.
The varsity basketball teams in Michigan are moderately successful, with many players ending up in professional basketball. The most famous of these is likely Magic Johnson, who led the team to win the National Championship in 1979. They have won another Championship since, and have also gained twelve Big Ten Championships in men’s basketball.

In 1951 and 1952, the Michigan State Spartans went undefeated winning both seasons and earning a national record for the most consecutive wins. In 1953 the team was finally admitted to the Big Ten, winning their first Rose Bowl that same year against UCLA.
Spartan Stadium is the official home of the Michigan State Spartans football team. The venue is the fifth largest in the Big Ten, seating more than 75,000 fans.It boasts 24 luxury suites and 800 club seats. Built in 1923 at a cost of 16 million dollars, the stadium went through an expansion in 2005 that cost 64 million dollars, creating more seating, the luxury suites and a grand entrance, among other features.
Another notable team under the Michigan State Spartans name is the men’s ice hockey team. A Division 1 team, the Spartans hockey team is part of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. They have the distinction of having played in the most attended game in the history of hockey. Played in the school’s football stadium, the game was attended by more than 74,000 fans, ending in a tie against U M.
