The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of only four school teams to have won the NCAA Championship in basketball, football, and baseball. The school participates in the NCAA Division I in all sports and is part of the Big Ten in most. While they are best known for football and basketball, Ohio State also participates in golf, baseball, swimming, and many other sports.
The Ohio State Buckeyes football team began play in 1890. The team has won 37 Conference Titles and seven National Titles. They are one of five teams to have won more than 800 games.
Since 1922, the Ohio State Buckeyes football team has played their home games in Ohio Stadium, also known to fans as “The Horseshoe.” With seating for more than 100,000 fans, the stadium was built at a cost of 1.34 million dollars. In 1994, the stadium was renovated at a cost of 194 million dollars, updating the facilities and expanding seating.
Although the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team has only won one National championship in their extensive history, they are still extremely successful. They have made an appearance in the NCAA tournament every decade since 1930, sharing that record with only one other team. The team has had a total of 21 tournament appearances since their creation in 1898 despite penalties and violations during a period of years when one coach caused the team to violate league rules.
Those violations caused the team to lose credit for the championships and titles earned during the period and they had to pay back all the money received. The school’s proactive responses to make up for the violations have been held up as an example of how schools should act once dishonesty is uncovered.
Another notable Buckeye team is the track team. They were the first Ohio State Buckeyes team to win a national title. Track at OSU has produced many Olympic athletes such as Jesse Owens, who is still considered one of the greatest Olympians ever. With 48 athletes going to the Olympics, they have won 77 total medals, with 33 of them being the Gold.
The official mascot of the Ohio State Buckeyes is Brutus Buckeye. Brutus is a student that wears the school colors and has the head shaped like the nut of a buckeye tree, which is the inspiration for the school’s name. The original Brutus was actually a papier-mâché nut worn over the whole body. Modifications and improvements over time have brought the team to their current incarnation of the mascot. Brutus appears at home games all over campus and also out in the community.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have a sports program to be proud of. The teams produce national champions and Olympic Athletes and the school has gained a reputation for excellence within the college sports community.
