The Syracuse Orangeman and Orangewomen were the previous nicknames of the teams now known as simply the “Orange.” The school supports many different varsity teams, however they are most famous for the football and basketball programs. Other sports offered at the school are hockey, rowing, soccer, swimming, lacrosse, tennis, and more. Syracuse does have a baseball team that plays at the club level but their official varsity team was disbanded in 1972.
Syracuse Orangemen basketball began play in 1900. As NCAA Division I team, the school holds a record in the NCAA for the most winning seasons consecutively with 40. They are the fifth most winning team of all time.
The Syracuse Orangemen football team has not enjoyed as much success as the basketball team, yet they are just as popular and fans are excited and supportive of the team. With four conference titles and one national title, the team is hard working and entertaining.
They have also provided several players to the NFL including Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Floyd Little, who all wore the number 44. The number has become closely associated with the team, and was retired in 2005 to honor the players who wore it and the number itself. Officials at the university also requested a special zip code for the school to include the number.
Home games at the school are played at the Carrier Dome, Manley Field House, and Carmelo Anthony Basketball Center. The Carrier Dome hosts the Syracuse Orangemen basketball, football, and hockey teams. With seating for 49,250 fans, the Dome has the prestige of being the largest domed stadium of any college campus and also the largest in the Northeastern US. It is also the largest on campus basketball arena, making it a contender every year for the highest attendance records in the league.
Manley Field House is surrounded by baseball, soccer, and hockey fields. The structure holds offices for the athletic department as well as weight rooms and academic rooms. It was originally built for the basketball team and at the time was one of the largest venues in college basketball. The Carmelo Anthony Basketball Center holds much the same purpose as the Field House, but focuses entirely on the basketball programs.
The official mascot of the Syracuse Orangemen is Otto the Orange. First officially recognized in 1995, Otto has actually been around since 1980. The mascot was created in the first successful attempt to replace the original mascot, the Saltine Warrior, who was seen by some students as offensive and stereotypical. The first replacement, a Roman Gladiator was regularly booed when appearing, prompting the creation of a new mascot, Otto.
Sports are an integral part of Syracuse University. With pride and support from students, neighbors, and alumni, the varsity teams have become some of the most respected and well known in the country.
