HISTORY
The West Virginia University Mountaineers are part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as well as the Big East Conference. The Mountaineers have many athletic programs, however their best-known teams are the football and especially the basketball teams. They were the only school in the country in 2007 to win the BCS Championship, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The mascot of the West Virginia University Mountaineers is of course a mountaineer. Beginning all the way back in 1890, the Mountaineer has been making appearances at athletic games since 1936. Although the mascot was at first unofficially at the games, he now appears at most sports games. The official mascot is chosen each year during the final two games of the men’s basketball regular season. The chosen mountaineer is given a scholarship to the school, a buckskin suit to wear, and a coonskin hat. He or she is also given a rifle and powder horn. When men are picked to be the mascot for the year, they usually grow a beard, although it is not a requirement.
Of course no mascot would be complete without his accompanying spirit team. The West Virginia University Mountaineers have several teams, each one specializing in cheering for a specific sport or event. The Gold Team cheers for the football team and the men’s basketball team, and the blue team cheers for the women’s basketball team. Of course there is also the dance team that appears at both men’s and women’s basketball games throughout the season.
Because West Virginia has no professional sports teams the West Virginia Mountaineers are heavily supported by not just the students and alumni of the school, but also by the people of West Virginia. Fans have even been known to travel throughout the country to support their favorite teams.
The largest organization run by students on campus is the Mountaineer Maniacs. Founded to promote sportsmanship and awareness of the athletic teams in the school, it is also the official WVU student section at games.
Fans of West Virginia University have gained attention over recent years as being unruly and rambunctious. Despite this, they are also known as some of the warmest and most welcoming fans in the league, even honoring other team’s members who have passed on and offering condolences to the grieving players of the other teams.
Like any other school, West Virginia University has a large following and many fans, however to their fans, the WVU teams are a little more special. The athletes are hard working students who are part of a community and a team, and have gained the love and respect of their fellow students, neighbors, and even other schools and teams.
