William Martin Joel began taking piano lessons in 1953 and by 1963 he joined his first band, The Echoes who would later change their names to The Lost Souls. By 1970, Joel signed on as a solo artist and releases his first album, Cold Spring Harbor.
In 1973, Joel signs on with Columbia Records and records what would become the Album “Piano Man” which goes gold. In 1978 he released 52nd St. which became his first #1 Album. He then releases “Glass Houses” which hits #1 on the Billboard Album charts and remains for six weeks. The single, “It’s still Rock n Roll to Me” becomes his first #1 single.
1980 saw Joel receive the American Music Award for Album of the Year as well as a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male and in 1989 was presented the Grammy Legend Award.. Ten years later, Legendary Artist Ray Charles inducts Billy Joel into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. All in all, Joel has been nominated for 18 Grammy Awards and has won 6.
