In 2004, at the age of 15, Taylor Swift became the youngest writer ever hired by the Sony/ATV Tree publishing house. This, not coincidently, was the same year she turned down RCA Records (because they wouldn’t allow her to sing her own music) and signed with her current label, Big Machine Records.
The first single off her self titled debut album “Taylor Swift” was the song “Tim McGraw” which rose to number 6 on the billboard charts. The album would debut at #19 selling 39,000 copies in its first week of release. The second single, “Teardrops on My Guitar” which peaked out at #2 on the Billboard Charts. The third single, “Our Song” went on to become her first #1 song where it spent six weeks on the Country Charts, #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #24 on the Billboard Pop 100.
In 2008, Swift released “Fearless” which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with the highest sales of any country artist in 2008. Later in the year, She released “Beautiful Eyes” an EP that was sold exclusively through Wal-Mart and within the first the disc had sold 45,000 copies. When Fearless was released in November of the same year, its sales of 592,304 would become the largest opening U.S. Sales week in 2008 by a female artist in all genres of music.
