Texans History

When the Bud Adams and the Houston Oilers packed up and headed to Tennessee, Houston City Management was in competition with the City of Los Angeles for the 32nd franchise in NFL History.  While the NFL originally wanted to place another team in LA, the political trust of Los Angeles could not organize a plan to present to the NFL and the NFL was so impressed with the Houston plan that the city was awarded the 32nd franchise around September 1999 that would begin play in 2002 in Reliant Stadium.

The very first game for the new Houston Texans was against their only in-state rival, the Dallas Cowboys during primetime.  The Texans would stun the NFL world as it upset the heavily favored Cowboys 19-10.  Billy Miller scored the 1st ever touchdown in franchise history  The team would finish with a 4-12 record.  QB David Carr is sacked 76 times but never misses a game.

The 2003 season saw the Texans again get off to a grand start as they stun the Miami Dolphins 21-20 in Miami.  The season was plagued with injuries and though the team beat eventual NFC Champions Carolina Panthers and took eventual Super Bowl Winner into overtime, the team posts a 5-11 season.  QB David Carr is sacked only 15 times this season.

In 2004, the Texans got off to a bad start losing their first 2-games.  They finally get a win against the Kansas City Chiefs on the road upsetting them 24-21.  The team would beat teams that they should have lost to, they would lose one overtime but win the next week in overtime.  For the first time the team peaked over the .500 mark but would fail in the final game of the season against a struggling Cleveland Browns team, losing 22-14 and finishing with a 7-9 mark.  QB David Carr is sacked 49 times.

2005 marks the worst season for the infant franchise as the Texans as the team opens the season with a 6-game losing streak.  The team finishes with a franchise worst 2-14 season.  Afterwards, Texan fans made it clear that they wanted either Texas QB Vince Young or Heisman Trophy Winner Reggie Bush drafted.  The Texans, in another huge blunder, would  stun and infuriate the fans as they select DE Mario Williams with their draft pick.  QB David Carr is sacked 68 times.

2006 marked the year of a new beginning as the Texans hire Gary Kubiak as their Head Coach.  The beginning of the season looked much like the last as the team comes out of the gate 0-3. The team managed to pick it up winning three games while losing three more for a 3-6 start.  QB David Carr is sacked 41 times and is released from the team.  In 5-season with the team, Carr is sacked a despicable 249 times.

In New Orleans, where RB Reggie Bush was drafted was moving the ball for the Saints and helping to revitalize that franchise while Vince Young was leading the Tennessee Titans and on the way to Rookie of the Year honors and the Texans Mario Williams had a dismal 47 tackles.  Ironically enough, 2nd round draft pick MLB DeMarco Ryans would go on to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year with 156 tackles.  The team did finish on a high not as they won the final two games of the season, one against the eventual Super Bowl Champions 27-24.

In the offseason, the Texans release QB David Carr and picked up QB Matt Shaub from the Atlanta Falcons.  Midway through the season, Shaub would go down with an injured shoulder and backup Sage Rosenfels was tasked to complete the season.  The team posts an 8-8 record bringing the franchise record up to the 2008 season to 40-72, a .359 winning percentage.

The Texans have not made the playoffs.

Team Awards include 1 Defensive Rookie of the Year (DeMarco Ryans, 2006)

The Texans have no retired Jerseys
