History of the Philadelphia Eagles

In 1933, Bert Bell and Lud Wray paid $2,500 for the Frankford  Yellowjackets franchise,  a team part of the NFL from 1924-1931 although it’s origins date back to 1899 with the Frankford Athletic Association.  The Yellowjackets were in the NFL Championship in 1926.

Between 1933 and 1946, the team would struggle in the league and continue to be one of the worst teams in the league.  In the 1947 season, the Eagles post an 8-4 record and wind up in the NFL Championship game against the Chicago Cardinals falling 28-21.

The 1948 season saw the Eagles soar to a 9-2-1 record easily capturing the NFL Eastern Division Championship and in a rematch with the Chicago Cardinals only this time the outcome would be opposite as the Eagles smother the Cards for a 7-0 victory and the Franchise’s first NFL Championship.

The following season, the Eagles would continue their winning ways posting an amazing 11-1 record for their 3rd straight Eastern Division Championship.   In the NFL Championship game, the Eagles Beat up the Los Angeles Rams 14-0 for their 2nd straight NFL Championship.  It would be another 11 years before they would again compete for the Championship.

The 1960 season saw the Eagles stumble out of the gate but rebound for a stunning 10-2 record and the Eastern Division Title.  They would meet up with the Green Bay Packers  in the NFL Championship game.  Leading that game most of the way, the Eagles suddenly found themselves down 13-10.  On the ensuing kickoff, Ted Dean would the ball deep into Packer territory and would retake the lead 17-13 with 5:21 left.  The Packers would respond with a drive that would take them to the Eagles 8-yard line but time ran out on the Pack as the Eagles capture their 3rd NFL Title.  As the AFL and the NFL merge, it would be 20 seasons before the Eagles again regain a Division Championship.

The 1980 season saw the Eagles led by Head Coach Dick Vermeil and veteran QB Ron Jaworski and the team jumped out of the gate winning 11 of their first 12 games.  They would finish with a 12-4 record and earned a trip to the NFC Championship game against the Dallas Cowboys.  In the game, the Cowboys were forced to wear their unlucky blue uniforms and lost to the Eagles 20-7.  The Eagles capture their 1st ever shot at the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XV matched the Eagles against the Wild Card team Oakland Raiders.  Nobody put much hope in the Raiders and the Eagles may have been reading too much press about how much better they were than the Raiders for when the final gun went off, the Raiders walked off Super Bowl Champions with a 27-10 thumping of the Eagles.
