Rams History
The St. Louis Rams originally played as the Cleveland Rams from 1937-1942 and from 1944-1945. The franchise moved to Los Angeles where they played from 1946-1994. The franchise again moved to its current location in St. Louis, Missouri post 1994 season and played their first game as the St. Louis Rams on September 3, 1995 at the former home of the Cardinals, Busch Stadium. The team would miss the playoffs and finish with a record of 7-9. The second season the Rams shake up the team by trading running back Jerome Bettis to Pittsburgh and pick up Nebraska star Lawrence Phillips. Phillips would struggle the entire season and the team finished with a 6-10 record.
The team fired Head Coach Rich Brooks and began rebuilding with new Head Coach and recently un-retired Dick Vermeil. Vermeil would take two short years to get his team into the playoffs and by the 1997 season, the Rams were a team to be reckoned with as they finished the season with a 13-3 mark. In a blockbuster trade, the Rams pick up RB Marshall Faulk and sign free agent QB Trent Green, who would eventually give way to unknown Kurt Warner. Warner would go on to win the League MVP Award by throwing for 4,353 yards and connecting on 41 TD passes. Marshall Faulk would also win the Offensive Player of the Year awards for racking up 2,429 yards of total offense.
Super Bowl XXXIV matched the NFC St. Louis Rams against the Tennessee Titans in New Orleans. The Rams, 14 point favorites failed to get their offense off the ground as they struggled to score 3 field goals taking a 9-0 lead into the half. Midway through the 3rd quarter, the Rams finally scored their first touchdown to take a 16-0 lead. The Titans would answer back with 16 straight points to tie the Rams with 2:12 left in the game. The Rams MVP would answer back with a 73 yard TD strike to WR Isaac Bruce to again take the lead. The Titans would muster one last drive with Steve “Air” McNair taking his team down to the 10-yard line with but six seconds remaining. Then the improbable happened as Rams linebacker Mike Jones tackled Tennessee wide out Kevin Dyson one yard shy of the goal line to stop a potential game winning touchdown sealing the victory for the Rams. Kurt Warner was named the Most Valuable Player and became only the 6th player to win both the NFL and Super Bowl MVP award in the same season following Bart Star, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Emmitt Smith and Steve Young.
The Rams have made the playoffs 5 times in 14 seasons and have won their division 3 times (1999, 2001, 03). They have won their conference 2 times (1999 and 2001). They have won the NFC Championship 2 times (1999 and 2001) and they have won 1 Super Bowl (1999)
