The first ticket sold in Houston for baseball was for the new franchise the Houston Colt 45’s. They played in the league under that name until the end of the 1964 season and coincided with the franchise moving indoors to their new home, the Astrodome. With that move, they then changed their name to the Astros.
The Astros would compete for many years but in the 1980 season, the team began to peak when tragedy struck. Star Pitcher J.R. Richard has a stroke midway through the season that would end his career. The team would get through the tragedy and claimed their first ever Division Title in a 1-game playoff. In the NLCS, the Astros would take on the Phillies and were a series away from the World Series. However, the Phillies would take the game in 5-games. The next season the Astros would again compete for the division title. The season would see a strike halt the season midway, and after play resumed, Nolan Ryan would throw his 5th career no hitter to break Sandy Koufax’s record. In a head to head with Los Angeles Dodgers, the Astros needed 1 win to advance to the NLCS but the eventual World Champion Dodgers would end up winning all three games at home.
The 1986 season saw a dominating performance from P Mike Scott in route to capturing the NL West. In the NLCS, the Astros faced the Mets of New York who had to rally in game 7 to take the series.
The 2004 season saw the Astros as one of the top teams in contention for the World Series. With Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemons on the mound the Astros caught fire late in the season and captured a Wild Card Birth by 1-game over the SF Giants. They finished with a 92-70 record and were in the playoffs for only the 8th time in franchise history. In the playoffs, two of the Astros would have to overcome a personal tragedy as friend and major leaguer Ken Caminiti, personal friends of both Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell, died of a drug induced heart attack. Both players would play well during the series but Clemens would begin to tire and could not get them over the hump as the Cardinals coasted into the World Series.
The following season the team suffered a loss as Beltran signs with the Mets and Jeff Kent leaves to play for his hometown Dodgers. The franchise would return to the playoffs with an 89-73 record. In the playoffs, the Astros went through St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, and Roy Oswalt would earn NLCS MVP honors as the franchise finally makes it into the big game.
In the World Series the Astros faced the Chicago White Sox who had been battling their own playoff demons. The Sox took an immediate 3-game lead and finished off the Astros in game four, 1-0.
This off season, the Astros acquired INF Jeff Keppinger from the Reds, released INF David Newhan, signed C Ivan Rodriguez to a 1-year contract
The Astros are managed by Cecil Cooper and are coached by Jose Cruz (First Base Coach), Ed Romero (Bench Coach), Sean Berry (Hitting Coach), Mark Bailey (Bullpen Coach), Dewey Robinson (Pitching Coach) and Dave Clark (Third Base Coach)
