AFC Championship
This years AFC Championship game matches the 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers against the 11-5 Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field on Sunday January 18, 2009. The Steelers and Ravens have met up twice this season, with the Steelers winning both games by a combined 7 points.
The Ravens have relied on their defensive ability to hold teams down. The Steelers know this first hand (as stated above) as do the Tennessee Titans, who were held to 10 points in the wildcard game.
The setting was perfect for a Championship game. Twenty degree weather, (with a 15 degree wind chill), light snow falling and yellow terrible towels waiving met the two teams as they squared off for the AFC Championship Trophy Sunday afternoon.
The Pittsburgh Steelers came into the game with the highest rated defense in the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens, no staunch at defense, came into the game touting the number two defense in the league. With that said, Pittsburgh fans expected a defensive feast and they were not disappointed as Troy Polamula’s interception with 4:34 left in the game sealed the victory for the Steelers and the fate of the Ravens. Rookie Quarterback sensation Joe Flacco threw 3 interceptions and was held to 141 yards and no TD’s. Veteran QB Big Ben Roethlisberger completed 16/35 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown as Pittsburgh hangs on to win 23-14 in what was a hard hitting contest.
The Steelers will face the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.
